Already, many nonprofits are receiving inquiries from students asking for positions as interns for the summer and fall.  Interns are a great resource and can provided a needed source of people power for organizations with limited budgets and staff with more work than they can handle.

Everyone is familiar with the immigration law requirements when employing staff—an employer must verify the employee’s legal status and ensure that the employee completes a Form I-9 in a timely manner.  But what are the rules when your organization is bringing an intern on staff?  Are there any restrictions when employing non-U.S. residents as interns?  What about individuals who remain in the U.S. under the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals Initiative?  Does it matter whether the intern is unpaid or receiving some form of compensation?
