Morgan Lewis partner Brendan Kalb moderated a fireside chat called "Data Collection and Protection" at the Managed Funds Association (MFA) West 2019 Conference in Santa Barbara, California, with US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Commissioner Dawn Stump. Morgan Lewis served as a sponsor for the event. During the chat, Commissioner Stump announced a Data Protection Initiative to evaluate and improve the way registrants' information are collected. She will be investigating whether the CFTC is only collecting the data it needs and whether its procedures are tough enough to withstand increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks and the personally identifiable information the CFTC gathers, as well as data collected on trading transactions, positions, and strategies. She believes this is a beginning step in evaluating the CFTC's strengths and vulnerabilities in an attempt to develop a meaningful policy adapted to ever-evolving threats and advances in data security.
