Stephen Abreu is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. Abreu practices in the areas of patent law and life sciences transactions. His patent practice involves patent infringement and invalidity opinions; due diligence review; freedom-to-operate analysis; portfolio management; and patent prosecution in the biotechnology arena, particularly the areas of molecular biology, biologics, genomics, gene therapy, pharmaceutical, and microbiology. Mr. Abreu's transactional practice focuses on life sciences transactions and intellectual property litigation matters. He has negotiated, drafted, and managed a variety of intellectual property transactions for life sciences companies, including collaboration agreements between biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, licensing agreements with commercial businesses and academic institutions, and supply and manufacturing agreements.
Mr. Abreu received his J.D. from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 2007, where he externed for the U.C. Davis Office of Technology Transfer. While in law school, he was president of the King Hall Intellectual Property Law Association and the Black Law Student's Association, and was a mentor for the King Hall Outreach Program. Mr. Abreu received the Sidney B. Williams Intellectual Property Scholarship, administered by the American Intellectual Property Law Association, in 2006.
Mr. Abreu received his M.A. in molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2003, where he focused his research on characterizing vacuolar calcium exchangers and ATPase pumps in fungal model organisms. He received his B.S. in biochemistry, with an emphasis on molecular biology, from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1999. Mr. Abreu has worked as a bench scientist for several startup biotech companies and as an investment analyst for a Wall Street investment house. Mr. Abreu is fluent in Spanish and English.
