—Brown’s experience in the nonprofit arena adds to firm’s existing strength—
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 5, 2007: Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP is pleased to announce that Susan Denver Brown, recently the deputy tax legislative counsel for regulatory affairs at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has joined the firm as of counsel in the Tax Group’s Tax-Exempt Organizations Practice, resident in the Washington, D.C. office.
While at the Department of the Treasury, Ms. Brown worked to implement major legislation affecting exempt organizations, including the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Ms. Brown also worked on guidance relating to excess benefit transactions involving charity insiders, joint ventures, unrelated business income tax, political activity, and other issues.
“Susan’s extensive public policy experience is an excellent addition to our sophisticated tax-exempt organizations practice,” said Gary B. Wilcox, head of Morgan Lewis's Tax Practice and former IRS Deputy Chief Counsel. “We are thrilled to have her join us in Washington where she will work with a number of colleagues who, like Susan, have brought impressive government experience to the firm.”
Morgan Lewis’s tax-exempt clients include many of the largest and most sophisticated nonprofit organizations in the country, including private and operating foundations, colleges, universities and other educational institutions, donor-advised funds, scholarship organizations, museums and cultural organizations, scientific research organizations, low-income housing and community development organizations, disaster relief organizations, churches and religious organizations, international charitable organizations, and many other special-purpose nonprofit organizations. In addition to a sophisticated tax practice, the firm offers its tax-exempt clients unmatched resources in non-tax areas, including intellectual property, labor and employment, business and finance, real estate, litigation, and antitrust and trade regulation.
“Susan has been a key player on every major legislative or regulatory development affecting exempt organizations for nearly a decade,” said Celia Roady, head of the firm’s Tax-Exempt Organizations Practice and a former vice chair of communications and council member and chair of the Exempt Organizations Committee for the ABA's Section on Taxation. “We are very excited that Susan has brought her unparalleled experience on tax-exempt policy issues to our team.”
Before joining the U.S. Department of Treasury, Ms. Brown worked as an attorney at two New York–based firms. She also worked as an in-house counsel to various nonprofit organizations, including institutions of higher education.
