Much of the Morgan Lewis pro bono insurance recovery practice recently has been related to Hurricane Katrina.
Morgan Lewis provided direct assistance to evacuees of Hurricane Katrina. In Los Angeles, the firm was involved in a clinic set up by the Los Angeles Pro Bono Council to assist the 15,000 low-income Katrina evacuees in the area. Similarly, in Washington, D.C., the firm partnered with the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program to staff a helpline and clinic for displaced Katrina victims in the D.C. area.
In Los Angeles, the firm assisted a client in a successful insurance claim arising from the disaster under a renter's policy.
Our client noted that "[t]he amount of money you helped me to collect . . . may not have been a huge amount, but it will surely help me on my way to start rebuilding my life. More importantly, it has given me a small sense of security, which is something that I have not had for a year now."
In Philadelphia, a team of Morgan Lewis attorneys secured a substantial settlement in insurance coverage for a family whose home and personal property were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Prior to the firm's involvement, the family had received only a minimal settlement offer from the insurer.
