Morgan Lewis

DRI Diversity for Success Seminar

Chicago

Morgan Lewis's Joan Haratani will be speaking on June 13, 2008 at DRI's 3rd Annual Diversity for Success Seminar. Ms. Haratani will participate in a panel discussion on "Race and Gender in the Courtroom" at 10:30am, and at 1:45pm will offer a presentation on "Minority Lawyers in Majority Firms."

"Race and Gender in the Courtroom" will discuss whether a litigator should consider the racial and gender demographics of the jury pool in staffing a trial team or selecting expert witnesses and corporate representatives. Do jurors perceive minority and female attorneys any differently than their white male counterparts?  If so, what, if anything, should a minority or female litigator do to address this difference in perception? A panel of experts will tackle controversial questions concerning the impact of race and gender in the courtroom.

"Minority Lawyers in Majority Firms" will speak about strategies to continue a successful law career without succumbing to the pitfalls of discrimination. It is not always easy to be a minority lawyer in a majority firm. To whom do you go for mentoring and career guidance?  If you have witnessed or experienced what you believe to be racial discrimination or harassment within your law firm, how should you react? In whom can you safely confide? Listen to a lawyer who will discuss the challenges of being a minority in a majority firm and suggest ways to overcome those challenges.
