Morgan Lewis established offices in Moscow, Russia, and Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 2012, with the addition of a team of lawyers from a prominent international firm that began operating in the region in the 1990s. The offices represent clients in the region encompassing the Russian Federation, the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including Central Asia and the Caspian.

The Moscow team of more than 30 lawyers is led by partners who have practiced for decades in the region and are fluent in Russian and English, as well as a variety of other languages. Collectively they advise prominent foreign and Russian companies on some of the largest transactions in Russia and the CIS, with total values of several hundred billion dollars.

The team includes partners Brian Zimbler, Jonathan Hines, Oleg Berger, Vasilisa Strizh, Roman Dashko, and Carter Brod, together with international partners Dmitry Kunitsa, Nane Oganesyan, and Dina Kzylkhodjaeva.

The office has sophisticated transactional capabilities, experience in litigation and international arbitration, and depth in key industries such as oil and gas, mining, electric power, financial services and insurance, technology and media, manufacturing, and infrastructure and real property. The transactional capabilities focus on significant mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate finance, and debt and equity capital markets matters, both for foreign and local clients.

In the energy sector, the office's practice encompasses upstream oil and gas, oilfield services, power and renewable energy, and a wide range of other energy matters. Key projects include mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures of energy companies, farm-ins, and farm-outs and advice on joint ventures involving energy properties and facilities, along with related financing transactions and regulatory proceedings.

The practice also includes advice on project finance, insurance, leasing and real property matters, infrastructure projects, competition and regulatory issues, tax matters, intellectual property (including anti-piracy), international and domestic litigation and arbitration, and a wide range of other issues under Russian and foreign civil and commercial laws. Our capabilities also cover compliance matters, including corporate governance, disclosure, anti-corruption, and anti-money-laundering.
