Hugh E. Tanner is a partner in Morgan Lewis's Litigation Practice. Mr. Tanner focuses his practice in the areas of complex commercial litigation, tax litigation, and corporate investigations and white collar matters. He regularly represents clients in federal grand jury investigations and internal investigations and has handled numerous mediations, arbitrations, and trials in matters concerning business disputes, fraud, energy, commercial contract law, probate, employment, construction, bankruptcy, professional liability, real estate, antitrust, and banking. Mr. Tanner has handled a variety of class action matters and has assisted a number of entities in the evaluation, development, and implementation of comprehensive records management and e-discovery programs.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Tanner was a partner in the Litigation and Tax Departments at a full-service international law firm.
Mr. Tanner has spoken at numerous seminars, roundtables, and client-specific conferences on the topics of electronic record retention, electronic discovery, and related record-retention issues. He is also a recent presenter at programs sponsored by the State Bar of Texas and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
When not busy serving his clients, Mr. Tanner enjoys spending his time coaching his son in baseball and his daughter in softball. Mr. Tanner was instrumental in establishing the Challenger Baseball Program for mentally and physically handicapped children in Houston. His efforts were recognized by President George W. Bush when his Challengers were invited to the White House to play "Tee Ball on the South Lawn" in a game attended by President and Mrs. Bush, cabinet officers, and Major League Baseball current and Hall of Fame players. He is also a member of the International Board of Directors for Little League Baseball Incorporated.
Mr. Tanner received his J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1985, where he was managing editor for the Mississippi Law Journal. Prior to attending law school, he spent two years as a tax accountant with the international accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. Mr. Tanner received his B.B.A., cum laude, in accounting from the University of Mississippi in 1980. Mr. Tanner is a member of the University of Mississippi Hall of Fame.
Mr. Tanner is admitted to practice in Texas and before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Northern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas. Mr. Tanner is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Claims Court.
