Thomas M. Sossong, Jr. is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Intellectual Property Practice. Dr. Sossong focuses his practice on biotechnology-related patent law, with a secondary focus on small-molecule chemistry.
Dr. Sossong's practice includes patent prosecution and due diligence, patent-related transactional work, and the preparation of infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions. He also develops patent strategies and manages patent portfolios. Dr. Sossong works with both large and small pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, universities, and research institutions.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Dr. Sossong practiced patent law at a prominent Philadelphia law firm. Prior to that, Dr. Sossong worked for several years as a patent agent at Morgan Lewis.
Before pursuing his legal career, Dr. Sossong worked as a scientific investigator at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals (now GlaxoSmithKline) in the microbial biochemistry research division. His work focused on the identification of new antibacterial targets through a combination of molecular biology, enzymology, protein chemistry, and biophysical chemistry techniques. Dr. Sossong's work also included the validation and biological refinement of early-stage drug candidates.
Dr. Sossong earned his J.D. from Temple University, Beasley School of Law in 2005, where he was a recipient of the Sarah A. Shull Memorial Graduation Award for excellence in legal research and writing and the Jacob Kossman Graduation Award in Criminal Law for the best paper in the field of Constitutional rights and privileges of persons accused of a crime. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Temple University in 1997 and his B.S. in biochemistry from East Stroudsburg University in 1992.
Dr. Sossong is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
