Arthur T.C. Au is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. Au focuses his practice on strategic intellectual property counseling, intellectual property transactions, patent and trademark prosecution, patent infringement and invalidity analyses, and due diligence investigations in conjunction with corporate and intellectual property transactions. He provides legal services to clients in various industries, including computer hardware/software, medical devices, Internet technologies, and telecommunications. Mr. Au works with clients to develop and implement strategies to manage and position their intellectual property assets for optimal return.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Au practiced patent law—with a focus in patent prosecution, patent validity and infringement analysis, and intellectual property due diligence for corporate transactions—at a prestigious patent boutique firm. The firm specialized in computer hardware/software, Internet technologies, semiconductor arts, and electrical and electronic arts, as well as medical and mechanical devices.
Mr. Au received his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2006 with a High Tech Law Certificate in corporate transactions. Before attending law school, Mr. Au worked for more than six years under various roles in the medical industry at Guidant Corporation. As an engineer and pre-clinical scientist, Mr. Au worked side by side with physicians and surgeons worldwide to design and develop interventional cardiology devices (e.g., stents, angioplasty balloons, and accessories) and minimal invasive cardiac surgery devices (e.g., anastomotic and surgical devices in OPCAB and CABG). As a project coordinator, Mr. Au built and managed schedules for various research projects, development projects, and clinical trials while managing and coordinating technical development and team operations. He also performed technical due diligence, participated in numerous business development transactions, and interacted closely with sales and marketing departments to manage customer relationships and to develop strategic marketing positioning for various interventional cardiology products.
Mr. Au received his M.S.E. in biomedical engineering, with a focus in neuroprosthesis, from Case Western Reserve University in 1998. He received his B.S.E., cum laude, with a dual major in biomedical and electrical engineering from Duke University in 1995, where he graduated with distinction. Mr. Au is fluent in Cantonese and English and has a conversational fluency in Mandarin. He can also read and write Chinese.
Mr. Au is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
