Barton W.S. Bassett is a partner in Morgan Lewis's Tax Practice. Mr. Bassett's practice focuses on international tax planning for both the outbound operations of U.S. multinationals and the inbound operations of foreign multinationals. This includes advice on structuring mergers and acquisitions, internal restructurings and operations, joint ventures, external and internal financings, and transfer pricing matters, including the transfers and licenses of intellectual property. Mr. Bassett also represents clients in audits and appeals before the Internal Revenue Service and has negotiated various advance pricing agreements, prefiling agreements, and competent authority agreements on behalf of clients.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Bassett was a tax partner at a national law firm.
Mr. Bassett received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1996, where he was named to the Order of the Coif. He received his B.A., with honors, from the University of California, Davis in 1992.
Mr. Bassett is the co-author of a quarterly article that focuses on international tax controversies for the Journal of Taxation of Global Transactions. He has lectured to professional and industry groups on various topics relating to the provisions of Subpart F, foreign currency, dual consolidated losses, the application of the business purpose standard, transfer pricing, and double taxation conventions. In addition to his presentations to professional and industry groups, he teaches an LL.M. course in International Taxation at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
