Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards Update
Twenty states and the District of Columbia have adopted mandatory renewable portfolio standards (RPSs) requiring retail electricity suppliers to increase the percentage of electricity supplied from wind power, solar energy, biomass, and other renewable energy sources. Other states have adopted “goals” to expand the use of energy generated by renewable resources. These standards and goals are now being implemented and revised through rule-making proceedings and rulings by state public utility commissions as well as new state-level legislation.
