WASHINGTON, D.C., September 22, 2005 — In response to the overwhelming need posed by the thousands of people displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP has organized a litany of free legal services.  The various clinics and services are being coordinated by Amanda Smith, leader of the firm’s Pro Bono Practice.

Insurance recovery is a primary concern for most Katrina evacuees.  As a result, the firm is assisting the University of Mississippi in developing a manual to directing victims how to best place insurance claims.  The firm is also developing a program that will provide direct assistance to Katrina victims in insurance matters.

The firm is also offering evacuees assistance on a city-by-city basis:

  • Washington, D.C.
In conjunction with the Washington, D.C. Bar Association, Morgan Lewis has volunteered to participate in a pro bono clinic, which will likely be run by the Washington, D.C. Legal Clinic for the Homeless.  The firm is on the referral list and the list for long-term needs.
  • Los Angeles
Current estimates suggest that 15,000 low-income Katrina evacuees will be living in the Los Angeles area, and the Los Angeles Pro Bono Council is setting up a pro bono clinic to assist them.  Los Angeles partner Andrea Ordin will be coordinating Morgan Lewis’ efforts.
  • New York
Morgan Lewis is working with the New York Pro Bono Coordinators Group to draw upon 9-11 experience, in order to provide assistance to Katrina victims in the New York area.  This includes marshalling the collective resources of the large law firms to work on policy advocacy and set up mediation programs.
  • San Francisco and Philadelphia
The firm is in working with the bar associations and non-profit legal services providers in both of these cities, in an effort to provide assistance to Katrina evacuees on a pro-bono basis.
