The Power of Pro Bono

Pro Bono in 2013

Over 71,000 hours were spent on pro bono representations, at a value to our pro bono clients of tens of millions of dollars.

Nearly two-thirds of the firm's attorneys contributed at least 20 hours to a pro bono matter; representations span all practice groups and offices.

Representations included more than 1,600 active matters, including nearly 400 new matters.

We are pleased to offer Morgan Lewis Summer Experiences, a program through which law students can pursue three different options—ML Client Experience, ML Community Experience, and ML Firm Experience—during their summer with the firm.

Morgan Lewis Client Experience partners clients with summer associates for four weeks. This option facilitates the professional development of law students by providing a deeper understanding of the operations and issues handled by in-house legal departments.

Morgan Lewis Community Experience offers summer associates the opportunity to work with pro bono partner organizations. Law students will spend up to four weeks on assignment at a public interest or community service partner, such as the United Nations, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and the Support Center for Child Advocates.

Morgan Lewis Firm Experience offers summer associates a traditional law firm experience. Law students will spend all 10 weeks at a local office with opportunities for client work, pro bono challenges, and professional development training.

Morgan Lewis Client Experience

We have long recognized the importance of creating ongoing, value-oriented relationships with our clients. We established Morgan Lewis Client Experience in 2012 when select summer associates worked for one of our largest clients for four weeks. Feedback from the client and the participating summer associates was very positive, compelling the firm to launch ML Client Experience as one of our three program options for law students. In 2013, 25% of our summer class participated in ML Client Experience, working with nine different firm clients.

"Whether you're interested in a corporate or litigation career, I would highly recommend Morgan Lewis' Client Assignment program. The experiences and relationships that you will develop will be invaluable in giving you insight into how firm attorneys interact with their biggest clients, what you can do to understand this relationship and how you can use this knowledge to become a better attorney."

"Having the opportunity to supplement my summer associate experience at Morgan Lewis with an assignment to a client was an incredible experience. In my four week assignment, I was able to see firsthand the kind of in-house legal matters that a major company faces daily. Now I feel even more prepared to deal with the various issues that any clients might face when I return to Morgan Lewis next year. I would highly recommend a secondment to any law student who is given the opportunity."

Morgan Lewis Community Experience

We established Morgan Lewis Community Experience in 2001. Every summer associate is given the opportunity to participate in the program, which allows law students to spend at least six weeks in the traditional firm program, followed by a full-time assignment at a public interest or community service organization. Summer associates who select ML Community Experience will receive a stipend equal to the salary that they would have received at the firm as a summer associate.

In prior years, summer associates have worked for organizations such as the United Nations, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Legal Counsel for the Elderly, Support Center for Child Advocates, American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Constitutional Rights, Education Law Center, NAACP, National Public Radio, Nature Conservancy, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and Sanctuary for Families. Find out which organizations our summer associates were placed with in 2013.

Morgan Lewis Firm Experience

Morgan Lewis Firm Experience offers summer associates a traditional law firm experience. The program allows law students to spend the full 10 weeks at a local office with opportunities for client work, pro bono work, and professional development training.
