S. Gerald Litvin, considered by many to be the dean of the Philadelphia trial bar, joined Morgan Lewis as senior counsel in September 2004. Mr. Litvin is a valued litigator and trial consultant for the firm. He assists in developing training programs, offers analysis and critique of mock trials and similar trial preparation programs, and helps Morgan Lewis attorneys develop theories, strategies and tactics in individual cases.
Mr. Litvin has tried more than 200 cases to verdict and has trained more than 1,000 trial lawyers in the art of courtroom persuasion. He enjoys a national reputation as a trial lawyer and a teacher of trial advocacy. He joined Morgan Lewis from Litvin, Blumberg, Matusow & Young, a firm with which he was associated since 1968. During his career, he tried cases in areas as diverse as product liability, medical malpractice, highway design, maritime, industrial and public transportation, some of which resulted in record-breaking verdicts on the local, regional and national levels.
In 1972, Mr. Litvin was selected as a teacher at the first National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) in Boulder, Colorado. After several years as a teaching team leader for NITA and similar programs, he became the founder, director and teaching team leader for The Academy of Advocacy created to improve trial skills and enhance the quality of litigated justice.
Mr. Litvin is also a frequent speaker at various law schools, bar associations and a variety of continuing legal education programs in many states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Iowa, Oklahoma, Delaware and California. In 1990, he was appointed professor of law at Temple Law School where he taught semester courses for third-year students as well as candidates in the LL.M. in Trial Advocacy program that he helped to create.
Mr. Litvin earned his J.D., cum laude and Order of the Coif, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. He was awarded the Gowen Fellowship for post-graduate legal studies.
