Mark L. Mathis is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Practice. Mr. Mathis advises clients with respect to a wide array of benefits matters, including the design, implementation, ongoing administration, and termination of qualified and nonqualified deferred compensation plans, equity compensation arrangements, and welfare benefit plans.
In addition to representing clients on benefits issues during corporate transactions, Mr. Mathis has worked with in-house benefits professionals and others to address the myriad issues that follow major corporate events, including acquisitions, divestitures, and Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganizations.
Mr. Mathis regularly advises clients on ERISA's fiduciary and prohibited transactions provisions. He also regularly counsels clients on designing, administering, and terminating plans that provide medical, disability, and death benefits; complying with COBRA continuation coverage and HIPAA requirements; and dealing with matters that involve an unusually high degree of litigation risk and/or novel issues.
Mr. Mathis received his LL.M. in taxation with a Certificate in Employee Benefits Law from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000; he received his J.D., cum laude, from South Texas College of Law in 1997, where he was a Langdell Scholar; and he received his B.A. in economics from Arizona State University in 1990.
Mr. Mathis is admitted to practice in Texas.
