Michael A. Bloom is General Counsel of the firm and a partner in the Bankruptcy and Financial Restructuring Practice. Mr. Bloom also serves as chair of Morgan Lewis's Standing Committee on Conflicts and Professional Responsibility. He has handled major Chapter 11 proceedings and out-of-court restructurings throughout the United States.
Mr. Bloom has served as counsel to the four major distributors of pre-packaged music in the world in a variety of significant out-of-court restructurings of music specialty retailers and wholesalers. He also has represented the major film studio distributors of home video products in similar restructurings and Chapter 11 cases.
Mr. Bloom co-founded and is a past chair of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Bankruptcy Conference. He has taught the corporate bankruptcy seminar at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. A principal draftsperson of Pennsylvania's Rules of Professional Conduct, Mr. Bloom is the six-term former chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Committee on Legal Ethics. From 1998 to 2005, he served as chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Commission and continues to serve as a member of the Commission.
Mr. Bloom has been recognized as a leading U.S. attorney by Chambers USA and named as one of the "Best Lawyers" by The Best Lawyers in America. He is a recipient of many awards for teaching and legal ethics and also, in 2000, received the Equal Justice Award presented by Community Legal Services, Inc.
Within the community, he serves currently as a member of the Board of Trustees of Dickinson College and the Advisory Board of the Homeless Advocacy Project. He served as an Overseer of the William Penn Charter School, a long-time Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania Ballet Association, and as a Director of the Philadelphia Distance Run. Mr. Bloom also is an active speaker on the topic of conflicts, professional responsibility, and risk management both within and without the firm.
Mr. Bloom is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Circuit Courts for the Third and Fourth Circuits.
