Jayesh Hines-Shah is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Litigation Practice. His practice focuses on consumer class actions and complex commercial litigation. He has defended consumer and securities class actions in federal and state courts, and has participated in the trial and arbitration of business and intellectual property disputes.

Mr. Hines-Shah represents financial services and high technology companies in consumer protection and unfair competition lawsuits. He has taken and defended depositions of fact and expert witnesses, drafted numerous dispositive and other substantive motions, and argued summary judgment and discovery motions. Mr. Hines-Shah's trial and arbitration experience includes a federal court jury trial that resulted in a defense victory for his clients.

Mr. Hines-Shah's pro bono work includes representing plaintiffs in civil rights lawsuits, including one case that settled favorably at trial, and representing indigent clients in social security and eviction proceedings.

Before joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Hines-Shah was an associate at an international law firm where he focused on securities, consumer class action, and general litigation. Prior to that, he clerked for Judge Keith P. Ellison of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Mr. Hines-Shah earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 2000, where he was the executive editor of the University of Chicago Legal Forum, a student-edited journal. He earned his M.A. in history from Johns Hopkins University in 1994, and his A.B., with honors, in history from the University of Chicago in 1991, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Hines-Shah is admitted to practice in Illinois and California and before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Ninth, Tenth, and District of Columbia Circuits; the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Central, and Eastern Districts of California.

  • Represented an airline in a dispute relating to the removal of a ticketing authority from an online travel agency. Assisted in defeating plaintiff's motion for preliminary injunction.
  • Represented a leading high-technology company in the federal jury trial of patent inventorship and state law claims. Assisted in obtaining post-trial judgment on state law claims; result was upheld by the Federal Circuit.
  • Represented the directors of a leading high-technology company in a securities and derivative lawsuit related to the termination of a chief executive. Assisted in obtaining dismissal of all claims; result was upheld by the Ninth Circuit.
  • Represented a leading energy company in a multibillion dollar securities lawsuit. Assisted in obtaining summary judgment and exclusion of plaintiff's damages expert; result was upheld by the Tenth Circuit.
