Philip J. Smith is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Labor and Employment Practice. Mr. Smith focuses his practice primarily on defending employers against claims of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation brought under California and federal statutory law. His practice also encompasses the defense of common law tort and contract claims arising out of the employment relationship. Mr. Smith has experience representing employers before California and federal courts, administrative agencies, and within alternative dispute resolution forums.
Mr. Smith received his J.D., from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2004. He received his B.A. in interdisciplinary studies, focusing on political economy, from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. Prior to attending college, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1991 to 1995, attaining the rank of non-commissioned officer.
