Robert Smyth, Ph.D., is a partner in Morgan Lewis's Intellectual Property Practice. Dr. Smyth's practice focuses on all aspects of biotechnology and pharmaceutical patent prosecution (both domestic and foreign); opinions involving patent infringement, freedom to operate, and validity; pre-litigation analysis; due diligence analysis; and license agreements. His practice also focuses on intellectual property due diligence analysis associated with venture capital financing and public offerings.

Dr. Smyth also counsels biotechnology companies in the development and commercialization of therapeutic and diagnostic products. He has an extensive background in the areas of pharmacology, immunology, virology, and molecular biology. He also has published and has been an invited speaker on intellectual property issues facing the biotechnology industry. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, he worked at a biotechnology company managing the prosecution and licensing of biotechnology and pharmaceutical patents and applications.

Dr. Smyth received his J.D. from Temple University, James E. Beasley School of Law. He also holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Temple University School of Medicine and a B.S. in biology from Syracuse University. In addition, Dr. Smyth completed his post-doctoral fellowship in virology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Smyth is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland only and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
