Richard W. Black is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Labor and Employment Practice, and is a member of the firm’s Complex Employment Litigation team. His practice focuses on defending corporate clients against claims of employment discrimination, primarily those involving class-wide claims of discrimination, in state and federal courts. Mr. Black also represents clients before the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state/local fair employment agencies. He successfully represented a major national retailer in multiple lawsuits alleging class-wide discrimination in violation of Title VII, and successfully defended a motion for class certification directed against a major regional utility company in an age discrimination lawsuit. Mr. Black also has dealt with statistical analysis relating to class-wide employment discrimination claims.
Before joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Black was an associate in private practice focusing predominately on advising and defending corporate clients in a wide range of employment matters. During the first three years of his career, Mr. Black both represented individual plaintiffs and defended corporate clients before administrative agencies, and in single plaintiff and class action/pattern or practice collective actions. In this regard, Mr. Black had the opportunity to work with senior trial attorneys from the Minneapolis and Milwaukee district offices of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the prosecution of class actions/pattern or practice collective actions in which the EEOC had intervened.
Mr. Black received his J.D., with distinction, in 1996 from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he served as managing editor of the Iowa Law Review. He received his B.A., with high distinction, in 1992 from the University of Iowa, where he was one of a select group of graduating Collegiate Scholars.
Mr. Black is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.
