Peter F. McAweeney is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Litigation Practice. Mr. McAweeney focuses his practice on insurance recovery and has represented policyholders seeking coverage for asbestos bodily injury and other toxic tort claims, product liability claims, environmental hazards, real estate and construction defect claims, and employer liability claims. He also counsels clients on dispute resolution, risk management issues, contract compliance, and alternative insurance programs, and negotiates the design and purchase of insurance programs for clients.
Mr. McAweeney recently litigated a six-year coverage dispute on behalf of an international manufacturer seeking recovery of insurance proceeds from more than 40 defendant insurers under more than 300 insurance policies for asbestos bodily injury and other toxic tort claims. After several phases of trial, the case was successfully resolved through negotiated settlements valued at over $1.2 billion.
Mr. McAweeney also has represented large real estate developers on a variety of insurance coverage matters, including dozens of construction defect lawsuits and environmental liability claims. In addition to litigation, he has advised these clients regarding insurance requirements under real estate sales and development contracts, and negotiated the procurement of complex insurance programs.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. McAweeney practiced in the litigation department of an international law firm in San Francisco.
Mr. McAweeney earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1990 and his B.S. in philosophy and legal studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. McAweeney is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
