Dean L. Fanelli, Ph.D. is an associate in Morgan Lewis's Intellectual Property Practice, resident in the Washington, D.C. office. He focuses his practice on issues facing the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. These issues include patent prosecution, intellectual property licensing, litigation, and opinion work, including drafting novelty, freedom-to-operate, validity, and due diligence opinions. Dr. Fanelli is also experienced in strategic patent management and licensing, from his in-house work with a major pharmaceutical company.

Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Dr. Fanelli worked as a patent agent and associate at a leading intellectual property boutique firm. In that capacity, Dr. Fanelli oversaw the patent estates of several pharmaceutical companies. His work focused primarily on issues of patent prosecution and counseling concerning the pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic and nutritional industries, which included pharmaceutical drugs and compositions, medical products, chemical compounds, polymer compositions, food additives and cosmetic compositions.

Dr. Fanelli actively participates in the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), American Bar Association and American Chemical Society. He is also a member of the AIPLA’s Intellectual Property Practice in Japan Committee. His articles have been published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals, and he has given presentations on various topics related to intellectual property.

Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Dr. Fanelli is admitted to practice in New York and the District of Columbia.

Dr. Fanelli received his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in 2002. He received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1999 from Temple University, where he studied the syntheses of biologically active amino acids and amino acid derivatives under the supervision of Dr. Franklin A. Davis. Dr. Fanelli is also a graduate of Villanova University, where he received his B.S. in chemistry in 1994.
