Managing Tipped Employees: The Implications of the $105 Million Starbucks Verdict

Corrie Fischel ConwayMichael J. Ossip, and Barbara J. Miller will present this webcast.

A recent decision by a California court to award more than $100 million to a class of former Starbucks "baristas" and subsequent lawsuits challenging the polling practices utilized by Starbucks and other employers have called into question traditional practices in industries in which employees typically receive and pool tips. These cases raise a number of issues for employers in the restaurant, hospitality, and other industries in which employees typically receive tips as part of their compensation. In response to these developments, Morgan Lewis is sponsoring a one-hour webcast on wage and hour issues affecting tipped employees.

During this webcast, the presenters will discuss:

  • The facts of the Starbucks cases and the nature of other challenges to employers' practices
  • How to ensure compliance with the FLSA and applicable state wage and hour laws
  • Future trends in pooling litigation
