FSMA – Proposed Rules and the New Risk Environment

February 27, 2013

On February 27, 2013, Morgan Lewis hosted a one-hour webinar discussing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) initial issuance of proposed rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

These proposals are two of the major components of the largest and most sweeping changes to food regulation in the United States in more than 70 years.

This webinar included a brief overview of the two most recently proposed rules-the Preventive Control Rule and the Produce Rule-and how they will affect the food industry.

Topics discussed included:

  • Discussion of the multiple components of the preventive controls that companies throughout the food chain will be required to implement
  • Analysis of the special on-farm requirements for produce growers and handlers
  • Clarification of the scope of the proposals and related exemptions
  • Guidance for participation within the rulemaking process
  • Evaluation of the immediate impact of the proposals
  • Broader discussion of the overall FSMA scheme and the evolving risk environment within the global food industry
