Companies and organizations that export products from the United States have a new opportunity to recover fees collected illegally by the U.S. Customs Service on exports between 1987 and 1998. In most cases, it is no longer necessary to file a lawsuit to pursue a claim. Further, a statute of limitations that barred claims more than two years old is no longer an obstacle. However, the Customs Service has proposed regulations that would severely limit new refunds. Immediate steps should be taken to determine if your organization is eligible, and claims should be filed with Customs before the proposed regulations become final.
