Allison N. Powers assists clients in defending against claims of violations of labor and employment laws in US federal and state courts and before administrative agencies. Allison’s practice emphasizes claims of systemic discrimination brought by plaintiffs in private litigation as well as lawsuits brought by agencies under federal and state anti-discrimination statutes on behalf of claimants. Allison also devotes a portion of her practice to federal and state wage and hour collective action defense.
In addition, Allison counsels clients regarding a variety of workplace matters—most often in hiring and pre-employment background screening—and assists with investigations involving employees at all levels.
Allison’s recent representative matters include serving as a primary associate in a putative race discrimination class action involving claims of disparate treatment and hostile work environment and as the lead associate in a nationwide gender discrimination class action lawsuit that brings claims under Title VII and the Equal Pay Act. Allison was also a member of the case team during the Firm’s representation of a major grocery retailer in an EEOC pattern or practice claim brought by the Chicago EEOC office asserting violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act relating to leave of absence and light duty policies.
In addition to her private practice, Allison maintains a successful pro bono practice that focuses on representing claimants seeking benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs and branches of the armed forces and immigrants seeking asylum and other relief under federal immigration laws. Allison was recognized by her law school alma mater as its 2017 Dean’s Attorney of the Year for Public Service.
In her professional life outside of the firm, Allison has served on Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic’s Young Professionals Board and is a past co-chair of the Young Lawyers’ Section of the Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago. She is a member of a number of bar associations.
