Christopher M. Varano defends employee benefits litigation, including Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) class actions. Chris represents plan sponsors, trustees, fiduciaries, service providers, and other clients facing a range of employee benefits claims and ERISA litigation around the United States. He has handled an array of ERISA matters, including claims challenging retirement plan investments, fees, and expenses; plan design and administration; stock-drop litigation; employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs); 401(k) savings plans; top-hat plans; and cash balance and other defined benefit plans.
In addition to his ERISA practice, Chris handles other large class or collective action employment disputes, counsels clients through personnel-related decisions, conducts internal investigations, and assists in the design and implementation of employment policies and practices. He also has an active pro bono practice and regularly represents clients pro bono in federal and state courts.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Chris was an associate at a prominent Philadelphia firm and advised clients on securities, employment, antitrust, white collar, and regulatory compliance issues. He routinely handled civil and criminal matters at both the trial and appellate levels in state and federal court. Before that, Chris was an associate in the Philadelphia office of a global law firm where he represented clients in complex litigation matters, focusing on securities and white collar litigation.
