Derek I. Simmons’ practice focuses on investment funds and financial regulatory matters. Derek helps Japanese and non-Japanese clients establish, register, and license investment funds in Japan. He also assists with regulatory issues including those pertaining to Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. Derek is admitted in England & Wales only.
Derek has broad corporate finance experience acting for sponsors and lenders in cross-border project, asset and real estate financings. He has worked as an associate in international law firms in Japan and as in-house counsel for a Japanese bank.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Derek worked in London as general counsel for two government-sponsored funds focused on financing social infrastructure projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
