Daniel Grunfeld is a partner in Morgan Lewis’s litigation practice and leader of the West Coast litigation practice. Dan focuses his practice on commercial and intellectual property litigation, serving as lead counsel in high-profile matters and acting as an adviser and strategist to clients on litigation, trial, and settlement issues. He represents clients in various industries, including healthcare, medical devices, automotive, alternative energy, entertainment, energy, hospitality, and civil rights.
In a February 2014 article, The Los Angeles Business Journal characterized Dan as a “big-name litigator.” The Daily Journal described a 2014 jury $131 million award in favor of one of Dan’s clients, achieved after many years of litigation, as follows: “The verdict marks a comprehensive win for the [client] and the attorneys with Morgan Lewis, led by the firm’s West Coast Litigation Leader Daniel Grunfeld.”
Dan maintains an active pro bono practice, recently serving as lead counsel in a seminal, widely publicized class action case that resulted in settlement benefiting more than 100,000 of Los Angeles County’s most vulnerable citizens. His work on the case led The Los Angeles Business Journal to honor Dan with its 2014 “In Kind Supporter of the Year” award.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Dan was co-chair of the Los Angeles office litigation department of another international law firm, where he was also co-managing partner of its Los Angeles and Palo Alto offices. From 2007 to 2009, he served as a member of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s four-person executive team, where he implemented the mayor’s policy agenda in sectors such as energy and the environment, economic development, homelessness prevention, and job creation. He also served as president and CEO of Public Counsel, the largest US pro bono public interest law firm. The firm more than doubled in size and expanded its scope nationally and internationally during Dan’s tenure.
The Daily Journal cited the firm’s victory and his efforts in the Alfred Mann Foundation case in naming him one of California “Top 100 Lawyers” for 2014. This was the eleventh time Dan has been named in the list. In naming Dan as one of the leading lawyers in America in 2011, LawDragon Magazine noted that “[Mr. Grunfeld is] an off the charts gifted strategist, widely respected for his ability, judgment, tenacity and integrity by business leaders, public officials, judges and fellow lawyers—including those he recently annihilated.”
He frequently speaks on legal and business topics to groups including the Beverly Hills Bar Association and the Institute of Corporate Counsel, and at seminars for Bloomberg Law.
A sampling of Dan’s recent representations include:
Alfred Mann Foundation vs. Cochlear Corporation—In 2014, in a case Dan handled since 2010 and brought over from his previous firm, a Los Angeles federal court jury returned an award on behalf of our client The Alfred Mann Foundation for Scientific Research for $131.2M. The jury found that two of the Foundation’s patents for cochlear devices, which assist hearing impaired individuals, were willfully infringed. The award was the second largest IP verdict in the US in 2014.
Dan has served for many years as lead counsel in a string of IP and commercial/ civil litigation disputes for one of the world’s leading automotive companies.
Dan served as lead counsel in a multi-firm successful effort in a CMS audit/ investigation of a leading California healthcare provider.
