James P. Looby litigates individual and complex class actions involving US federal, state, and local employment laws. His work includes claims under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). James also counsels employers on labor and employment matters, such as executive severance agreements, and defends clients against retaliation and whistleblower actions, including suits arising under the Consumer Financial Protection Act and the Dodd-Frank Act.
James’s litigation practice also includes defending employers against claims alleging violations of the Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. In addition to his labor and employment litigation work, James maintains an active pro bono practice.
James serves as a member of Morgan Lewis’s Chicago office Hiring Committee.
Before joining Morgan Lewis, James clerked for Judge William J. Bauer of the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Judge Thomas M. Durkin of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He also practiced at a well-known boutique litigation firm in Chicago.
In law school, James externed for Judge James F. Holderman, then-Chief Judge of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
