Mara E. Slakas Brown focuses her practice on litigation arising from the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and employee benefits, representing nonprofit and for profit entities in single plaintiff and class actions before federal courts across the United States. She regularly defends employers against challenges involving the administration and design of 401(k) and 403(b) savings plans, cash balance and other defined benefit plans, and plans exempt from ERISA. Mara also advises clients on issues regarding plan interpretation and responses to government inquiries.
Beyond employee benefits litigation, Mara counsels clients in planning and implementing changes to employee benefit plans, including severance plans and voluntary early retirement programs. She also maintains a broader labor and employment practice that includes defending employers against discrimination claims.
Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mara represented corporate clients in complex litigation matters, namely securities and antitrust class actions, and government investigations. She also served as a law clerk to Judge Joel H. Slomsky of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
