With more than 20 years of experience Matthew is one of the most experienced lawyers in the European structured finance market, having been involved in the market since the late 1980s and through subsequent innovations, diversifications, regulatory changes, booms and recessions.
Matthew’s experience includes advising a wide range of institutions and other entities that operate, invest in, or deal with businesses that provide financial services and products to the consumer, financial, commercial and public sectors in the UK and other jurisdictions.
Matthew has played a significant role in many landmark, innovative 'first of kind' transactions that have been widely followed by many issuers, including the first UK single issuer segregated multi-issuance residential mortgage backed securities programme. He has been involved with UK covered bonds since the first transaction in 2003 (before there was a legislative framework for such transactions in place).
His work covers the entire life cycle: from setting up origination platforms, to warehousing, to portfolio sales and purchases, to term capital markets financings, as well as developing new retail financial products. He has experience in an array of financings and transaction structures, including involving residential mortgages, consumer and commercial loans, commercial mortgages, leases, insurance contracts, auto/vehicle supply contracts, student accommodation receivables, social housing, commercial real estate, infrastructure assets, ground rents, residuals from structured finance transactions, Islamic/Shari'a assets and other receivables and assets.
Matthew enjoys helping clients find innovative, practical, and cost-effective ways to achieve commercial objectives, including regulatory efficiency, ratings, and flexibility. His work often involves bespoke structures, multiple jurisdictions, and regulatory layers.
