Powering Through the Drought: What the Water Shortage Means for the Electricity Sector

Please join us for a conversation with three of California’s leading policymakers on the intersection of water supply and energy, presented as part of our Energy Breakfast Series.

Dwindling water supplies are increasing tension between California’s energy sector and agricultural, business, conservation, and residential needs. The historic drought has compounded the state’s challenges of reducing carbon emissions from the electricity sector while keeping the lights on. At the same time, continued drought may mean that more water must be treated and transported into and throughout California, processes that are heavily energy intensive.

Speakers will address several questions, including, what are the operational and economic challenges to the energy system presented by dramatically reduced water resources in California? How will the ongoing drought affect the state’s ability to continue to provide clean, reliable, and affordable electricity in the long run? And, how are California’s energy and water agencies working together to ensure that energy and water systems planning is well coordinated?
