The Potential Impact of New DOL Rules on 401(k) Plan Participation

The Department of Labor had a very active 2015 with proposed rules on the definition of “fiduciary” and on state-affiliated IRA and 401(k) programs. This mini-briefing will update you on the high-level potential impacts of these developments on 401(k) plans. Further DOL pronouncements on these subjects are expected in mid-2016 so the briefing could end up being very current indeed.

2:10–3:00 pm
Understanding your Fiduciary Role

Perhaps no one topic in the employee benefits arena has drawn more attention and scrutiny over the last several years than the role of the plan fiduciary and the responsibilities fiduciaries have to the plan and its participants. This presentation will help advisors and their clients manage fiduciary responsibilities through a better understanding of existing rules and regulations. It seeks to help answer questions such as:

  • Role the Department of Labor (DOL) plays in defining, interpreting and enforcing fiduciary duties
  • Main responsibilities of a fiduciary
  • How can a fiduciary limit risk?
  • Misconceptions about: company stock, expenses and plan design features
