Weathering the Puerto Rico Debt Crisis: Managing Terminations and RIFs Under Law 80

Wednesday, November 16, 2016
01:00 PM - 02:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

The scope and severity of Puerto Rico’s fiscal crisis is forcing employers on the island to make difficult choices. The Commonwealth has already laid off more than 30,000 employees, and residents continue to brace for additional layoffs.

Law 80, known as the Unjust Dismissal Act, regulates termination of any person hired by a private employer for an indefinite term. Please join Morgan Lewis partner Melissa Rodriguez and NBCUniversal, Inc. – Telemundo Senior Employment Counsel Larissa Garriga  for a one-hour webinar to become familiar with Law 80 and to learn how an understanding of the law can help employers on the island navigate crisis and change.

Topics will include:

  • What is a discharge under Law 80?
  • “Just cause” requirement—what does it mean?
  • Conducting Reductions in Force (RIFs) in compliance with Law 80
  • Statutory severance
  • Exceptions to “just cause” requirements

CLE credit: CLE credit in CA, FL, IL, NY, PA, and VA is currently pending approval.
