Tax Bridge to Practice

Tax associate Andreas Andrews spoke on a panel for the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation inaugural “Tax Bridge to Practice Webinar,” sponsored by the ABA’s Young Lawyer’s Forum.

The panel, the topic of which was the “Age Old/Debt Equity Conundrum,” discussed the classification of certain instruments as debt or equity, providing background on the applicable rules for determining whether an instrument is debt or equity for tax purposes, along with an overview of recent Treasury regulations in this area. The panel also discussed the practical impacts of the debt/equity classification and why this issue extensively matters to the IRS.
