CORI Reform and Criminal Background Checks in Massachusetts: How the CORI Reform Impacts Your Practice (MCLE)

June 26, 2012
12:00 PM - 01:00 PM

Morgan Lewis attorneys Lisa Burton and Peter Mee address Massachusetts' Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) reform legislation at the CORI Reform and Criminal Background Checks in Massachusetts program.

Program description:

While most employers are aware that "Ban the Box" became the law for Massachusetts employers in 2010, many may not realize that the second round of significant changes implemented by the 2010 Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) reform legislation went into effect on May 4, 2012. Employers are now subject to a host of detailed new requirements that are further complicated by the fact that regulations issued by the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) still are not finalized.

Topics include:

  • Key changes imposed by CORI Reform that immediately affect Massachusetts employers.
  • Employer requirements for companies that utilize or access CORI records.
  • Employer requirements for companies that don't utilize or access CORI records.
  • When employers need to have policies in place and the recommended content of those policies.
  • The role of the Credit Reporting Agencies in the new CORI system.
  • The potential of the "safe harbor."
  • What CORI means in light of the new EEOC guidance on the use of criminal records.
  • How best to approach unsettled questions.
