Electric vehicle chargingOur industry-leading electric vehicles (EV) practice is actively engaged in the dynamic and competitive EV landscape—monitoring and advising on issues pertinent to automotive manufacturers, electric utilities, investors, and charging station developers. Please join us for a virtual symposium where we will hear from a panel of experts with diverse viewpoints from various sectors of the EV space on industry developments and legal considerations.

TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS SESSION:

  • The EV market has seen exponential growth for several reasons: federal support in terms of funding and tax credits, COVID flight from urban centers to suburban households providing more access to overnight charging opportunities, and general excitement for innovative products.
  • But barriers to widespread EV adoption still exist, including range anxiety for both those in urban centers who worry about monitoring their mileage and those in rural settings who don’t have access to enough charging stations, high prices of new EVs making them accessible only to a more affluent demographic, and challenges for energy providers and utilities to accommodate a new demand for EVs without compromising existing grid demands.
  • To hit the benchmarks set by US government targets for EV sales, there will need to be coordinated effort between private unregulated entities and regulated utilities, a nationwide plan to build out infrastructure in all areas in partnership with local communities, opportunities to optimize charging so it is cost effective, especially for those who want to charge their vehicles using renewables, and cyber protection for the network as it will be critical infrastructure.
