Q&A WITH OUR TECH INDUSTRY LEADERS

Silicon Valley partners Rahul Kapoor and Dion Bregman and Philadelphia partner Sarah Bouchard discuss some of the firm’s achievements for tech industry companies and the trends they view as most important to the success of businesses in this rapidly changing industry.

What is the scope of Morgan Lewis’s tech industry capability?

We offer comprehensive global services. This means that tech industry clients can turn to us for assistance with the broadest possible scope of relevant matters, from tech transactions and outsourcing to patent strategy and litigation. We continue to innovate to improve our services. Morgan Lewis recently rolled out a new service, opening a new EU e-Data center to help clients navigate data privacy, e-discovery and e-disclosure obligations at a time when regulations are being reshaped by the EU Commission and European courts. We also have a deep bench of lawyers handling everything from trademark and copyright matters to trade secrets and non-competition work, as well as a full-service labor, employment, and workforce mobility practice.

What distinguishes our tech industry capabilities?

Our lawyers collaborate across practices and jurisdictions to offer the full menu of services to our tech industry clients, including, for example, both patent prosecution and patent litigation capabilities. We work in cross-office teams from our offices in the world’s major innovation hubs, including Silicon Valley, Boston, Singapore, and London, just to name a few. Whether we’re working to secure a jury verdict in a major copyright infringement case, representing a leading cloud virtualization service provider in a government contracts matter, or advising an established software giant in an acquisition that gives it an edge in big data, we have the resources and talent to help clients achieve their business goals in what is an increasingly fragmented global economy. Our clients give our team some of the highest marks for increasing levels of client service performance, more customized approaches to their work, and increasing commitments to stay ahead of their needs. Clients also commend us for our efforts to develop and deliver new and innovative alternative fee arrangements.

What legal, regulatory, or business trends are keeping your clients up at night?

Companies are laying plans for the next economy that is being shaped by today’s extraordinary and often disruptive innovations. Among the exciting changes affecting our clients are developments in mobile payments and financial technology (i.e., fintech), and advances in telehealth and patient-centered devices, such as wearable technologies. We are also staying abreast of developments in artificial intelligence, including self-driving cars, drones, and the “Internet of Things.” All these advances naturally generate new opportunities and challenges, including those involving transactions, disputes, regulations, and patents.
