At 11:00 pm GMT on January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom formally left the European Union, completing a Brexit process that started in June 2016. As part of the transition period, the United Kingdom will remain in the European Union customs union and single market until December 31, 2020. During this time UK nationals will retain the right to reside and work in the European Union and vice versa, and freedom of movement between the European Union and the United Kingdom will continue.
European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals and their family members who lawfully enter the United Kingdom before December 31, 2020, will be required to make an application under the EU Settlement Scheme before June 30, 2021, if they wish to remain in the United Kingdom after June 30.
Free movement rights for UK nationals traveling to the European Union and vice versa will end on January 1, 2021. A new immigration system will be introduced, which is expected to incorporate some of the recommendations recently made by the UK Migration Advisory Committee.
