Walk a Mile in Their Shoes: Gabrielle Martin

February 26, 2020
Gabrielle Martin in Belgium

A culture of collaboration is more than a tagline for us. It’s weaved into the very fabric of the firm. So much so, that every year, trainees from our London office travel to another one of our international offices to get a better sense of the local customs clients embrace in those regions, how the firm is able to operate on a global scale, and the importance of networking with our people in those locations. Here Gabrielle Martin shares what those experiences meant to her.

What attracted you to Morgan Lewis?

The firm has a truly international outlook and really seemed to appreciate the fact that I had studied languages as an undergraduate and had already spent time living abroad in France, Germany, and Italy.

What stood out to you about the Brussels office?

The Brussels office felt more like a big family rather than an office!

How did the secondment give you a better view of the way the firm operated?

It demonstrated to me that we really do offer seamless services across all our offices. It’s so important to build up relationships with lawyers in other offices, as someone will always pop up when you least expect it to ask for your help or experience. It feels great to be remembered and is a great way to feel like you’re contributing to the firm as a whole.

Do you keep in contact with the people you worked with in Brussels?

Certainly, it was a fantastic networking opportunity. I met other trainees from other cities from a broad range of firms, some of whom I now meet up with weekly in London.

What was your favorite memory of your time in Brussels?

One Saturday we decided to hop across the border to Aachen to visit the German Christmas markets. Sadly the last train back to Belgium broke down so Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) paid for our 300 euro taxi all the way back to Brussels!

What advice would you give others who are considering the secondment program?

Do it, but not just “do it” —really—make the most of it!
