Pride: A Short History of LGBTQ Rights at UVA Law and Beyond, UVA School of Law

A feature about the history of LGBTQ+ rights at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Law highlights partner Susan Baker Manning’s work toward marriage equality. As a senior pro bono trial lawyer, UVA alumni Susan coordinated the business community’s efforts to file amicus briefs in Obergefell v. Hodges. She was sitting in the high court when the opinion was read. “Half of the room starts to cry,” Susan said. “This is not your most professional-feeling moment, but there are all these people there that have worked for decades on LGBTQ rights and on marriage in particular—people who are incredibly invested in it, people whose humanity is being affirmed by the Supreme Court of the United States—and there are just a lot of sniffles and tears quietly rolling down faces. . . . It was a life and career highlight to see all of that and to experience that rush of joy and relief and validation.”
