Morgan Lewis Adds Partner Baird Fogel, Boosting Services to Growing Renewable Energy Sector

February 06, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO, February 6, 2017: Morgan Lewis today welcomes Baird Fogel as a corporate partner focusing on energy transactions, further strengthening the firm’s capabilities in the fast-growing renewable energy industry. He will be based in San Francisco.

Mr. Fogel has long represented clients in the US and globally in the renewable energy industry, advising them on virtually all aspects of their business, including matters involving manufacturing, supply chain, distribution, construction, residential and commercial issues, small-scale and large-scale utility, government relations, and investment and finance.

Formerly the general counsel of one of the world’s largest solar companies, Mr. Fogel has developed and implemented strategies for solar, energy storage, microgrid, and wind projects in the United States, Europe, China, India, and Latin America. As a global transactional attorney, he represented clients in mergers and acquisitions; asset, interest, and stock sales; supply agreements; international project finance; project development and construction; commercial law; and compliance, corporate governance, and general corporate law.

“Baird’s thorough knowledge of energy transactions and his significant background in the solar and renewable industry, in combination with our firm’s global platform, offers our clients an extraordinary resource,” said Firm Chair Jami McKeon. “His addition further enhances our deep and broad energy, capital markets, and general corporate capabilities.”

Mr. Fogel is joining Morgan Lewis at a time when solar energy and renewables are experiencing robust growth worldwide. In the United States, for instance, solar has seen an annual growth rate of 60% since 2006, according to industry figures, and is particularly strong in California. Globally, renewable sources are also expanding rapidly.

“We are very glad to have a top energy transactions lawyer like Baird join us at a time of great potential for solar and renewable energy,” said Charles Engros, Jr., head of Morgan Lewis’s corporate transactions practice. “I am confident that Baird will be a tremendous asset to our clients in those sectors.”

Additionally, Mr. Fogel’s longtime colleague, Jack Stoddard, has joined Morgan Lewis as an environmental litigation of counsel, resident in San Francisco. Mr. Stoddard has represented clients on energy regulatory matters and proceedings before state and federal agencies, including the California Public Utilities Commission, the California Air Resources Board, and the California Energy Commission. Morgan Lewis’s environmental litigation practice, one of the first in the United States established by a major law firm, has a national reputation for successfully defending high-stakes matters at the federal and state levels.
