BOSTON, August 1, 2011: Morgan Lewis today announced that Lisa Stephanian Burton—who has nearly 20 years of experience counseling clients on employment law and was most recently chair of the immigration practice at another AmLaw 100 firm—has joined the firm as partner in its Labor and Employment practice, resident in Boston. Serving both large and start-up companies, Ms. Burton expands the firm's employment and immigration capabilities into New England.
"Lisa will help us offer clients with operations in Boston and New England the level of service they have come to expect from our labor and employment team," noted Joseph J. Costello, leader of the Labor and Employment Practice at Morgan Lewis. "Her knowledge of the challenges faced by both emerging and established businesses, particularly in the life sciences and technology industries, is an ideal fit for us."
Ms. Burton represents clients before government agencies as well as state and federal courts, and advises companies on the employment implications of mergers and acquisitions. She also assists clients with immigration matters such as securing employment-based visas and permanent residence for employees.
Ms. Burton counsels clients on a variety of labor and employment issues, including compliance with state and federal labor and employment laws and regulations on hiring, firing, reductions in force, developing and implementing employment practices and policies, workforce restructuring (including the use of independent contractors and leased, part-time and temporary employees); Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) matters, including a specialty in fatal accidents; and Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) matters.
"We are thrilled to add Lisa's employment and immigration experience to our growing team in Boston, which has expanded to 20 lawyers from just three attorneys in the city back in 2008," added Jonathan K. Bernstein, Office Managing Partner for Morgan Lewis in Boston.
She joins a Labor and Employment team that has been a finalist or winner in The American Lawyer Magazine's "Litigation Department of the Year: Labor and Employment Law" contest since 2004. Top ranked in directories and surveys like Chambers, Legal 500, and Law360's "Employment Groups of the Year"; the practice is home to more than 250 lawyers, paralegals, and employment specialists covering every geographic region.
