Business and Legal Community Leaders Convene for the Launch of Asian Business Law Institute
SINGAPORE, January 25, 2016: Morgan Lewis Stamford managing partner Suet-Fern Lee addressed business and legal community leaders on the opening day of Singapore Legal Academy’s (SAL) “Doing Business Across Asia: Legal Convergence in an Asia Century” conference on January 21 in Singapore.
Participants of the international conference came together to examine the business imperative for the convergence of business laws, especially with movements towards economic integration amongst Asian countries following recent developments such as the Asean economic community and the trans-pacific trade pact. The two-day gathering provided a platform for the official launch of SAL’s Asian Business Law Institute (ABLI). A ground-breaking initiative, ABLI seeks to promote the convergence of Asian business laws by translating proffered solutions into a set of model laws and provide practical guidance in the field of Asian legal development. The institute will promote clarity in business laws and offer practical and effective solutions to managing the diversity of Asian laws and provide a robust foundation for countries to build a cohesive legal infrastructure that will enable greater trade and investment flows to be unlocked.
“Today, we see not just the cross-border flow of physical goods but also phenomenal increases in the international flow of services, as well as the virtually instantaneous exchange of currencies, funds, bonds and stocks,” Ms. Lee, chair of the conference’s Steering Committee, noted in her address. “With this growing interconnectedness in the world, with economic activity much less localized, there has arisen a tremendous impetus for convergence of legal systems. Our legal systems need to adapt to this new paradigm.”
Ms. Lee is a member of the Executive Committee of the SAL Senate and also chairs the cluster on Legal Education and Studies. Widely recognized as a business leader and pioneer in legal development, she counsels Boards and companies on mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt capital markets, and corporate finance. She routinely leads some of the largest corporate transactions in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region. Leading legal publications have consistently praised her work and acknowledged her as a leading lawyer in the practice areas of banking, capital markets, corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions.
