Morgan Lewis Receives Exceptional Service Award from American Bar Association Death Penalty Representation Project

Friday, September 27, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 27, 2013: The American Bar Association Death Penalty Representation Project recognized Morgan Lewis with the Exceptional Service Award for outstanding pro bono representation to prisoners on death row at its annual volunteer recognition event on Thursday, September 26 in Washington, D.C.

Since 1988, Morgan Lewis attorneys have devoted more than 55,000 hours of pro bono representation on behalf of individuals on death row. These representations have resulted in a reduced sentence, a new sentencing hearing, a new trial and a full acquittal and release from death row.

“The lawyers who accept the difficult and important work of ensuring justice for men and women on death row are true heroes of our profession,” ABA President James R. Silkenat said. “I hope that lawyers across the country are inspired by their leadership and example."

The ABA Death Penalty Representation Project raises awareness of the lack of effective legal representation available to death-row inmates. The Project also works for systemic reforms to ensure that everyone facing a possible death sentence is represented at all stages by qualified legal counsel.
