Pro Bono Lawyers Face New World of Remote Work Due to Virus, Bloomberg Law

Morgan Lewis partner Dennis Gucciardo spoke with Bloomberg Law about the impact the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic would have on his efforts to counsel a pro bono client during a parole hearing scheduled for March 30. He discussed his initial plan to travel to the federal correctional institution in Otisville, NY, to accompany his client during the hearing, a standard practice. Because of the pandemic, Dennis planned to drive to the prison from Washington, DC, a five-hour trip, instead of flying. A few days before the hearing, however, Dennis was asked to participate by phone to help protect the health of the prison’s population. The logistical challenge, a first for the prison, would make the hearing more difficult. Still, with his support, Dennis’s client was recommended for parole.
