A disturbing new trend is making the modern breakup particularly messy. As the Internet has evolved into a basic necessity and as smartphones make it easier to share intimate media than ever before, unauthorized distribution of that media—“revenge porn”—is becoming increasingly frequent.

Angry exes with intimate photos or videos of their former significant others weaponize that media after the breakup by uploading it to the Internet, sometimes alongside the victim’s name and other identifying information.
