Chinese Investment in the United States: Avoiding the Mistakes of the Japanese (2017 Update)

Partner Satoru Murase presented this paper at Harvard's China - US Symposium on Building the Financial System of the 21st Century.

This concept paper is an update of the one written for the 2011 Symposium. With the continuing uncertainty regarding US policies, including those on trade, the 2011 paper surprisingly still has relevance. Despite heated trade accusations during and after the Presidential election, China has, for now, avoided many of the “mistakes of the Japanese.” At the same time, with the continuing increase in Chinese overseas investment, global Chinese trade, and China’s trade deficit with the United States, constant vigilance will be needed to avoid the intense tension levels the Japanese faced.
